Meet Bones Style Club, a sustainable fashion brand that's recently hit the scene in New Zealand. The love child of two Raumati besties, Bones Style Club brings ethics, style and affordability together through a versatile range of organic cotton mens and womens basics.
The BSC aesthetic is undeniably Wellingtonian - minimal and understatedly cool, a restrained colour palette consisting of white, grey and (of course) black, making for versatile and trans-seasonal wardrobe pieces.
All of their pieces are hand made in their Wellington Studio using 100% GOTS certified organic cotton - a practice they are passionate about.
We had a chat with co-founder Tessa Fitzgibbon to find out more.
How did Bones Style Club come about?
TF: In a world of abundance we are starved of good health, quality education and sustainable ways to exist. We want more, and we want it now. The global fashion industry is not exempt from this. We (humans) have a strong emotional attachment to how we look and we want this look at the lowest cost to us as an individual. Bones Style Club is my way to give back. We are an effort to realign strong ethics, style and affordability in the fashion industry.
What is the inspiration behind your design style?
TF: I'm inspired by textures, designs, fabrics and a minimalist approach to life after time spent living in Japan. The idea of high quality, high fashion pieces that transition between any occasion. There is no 'one size fits all' model that fits any aspect of the world that we live in, this is why each garment is made to order and made to suit the specific needs of every individual.
What role do you believe fashion plays in the environmental preservation of our planet?
TF: Fashion is a huge contributor to the environmental state and preservation of our planet. The majority of fabrics used today don't break down. If they are not breaking down then where are they going?
All your clothing is made from certified GOTS cotton - awesome! What made you decide to do this and how is this important to you?
TF: It was commonsense to to use certified GOTS cotton. We bring this into New Zealand in its raw state and have it spun locally. We support high quality local production having our labels and business cards made here too!
What other people or businesses have inspired you along the way?
TF: It's the people out there doing what they love and fulfilling their purpose which inspire me everyday. The optimists out there that are doing incredible things for others and the planet 'just because'. It's a natural calling I guess. I am also a intermediate school teacher and it's the curious minds and questions from others that get me up in the morning.
What's been the best thing about starting a fashion business in little old NZ?
TF: New Zealand has an incredible community vibe. There are so many individuals and groups out there doing amazing things. Lots of people are open-minded and wanting to connect with others. Yes we are small, but powerful beyond measure!
What’s next for Bones Style CLUB?
TF: Should we inspire another individual, group, or anyone out there to pursue their dream, to spread love, spread passion and give back to the Earth that supports and provides for us in every aspect of life - that would be truly incredible!
What is making you feel optimistic about the world right now?
TF: Essentially I love what I do and I wouldn't have it any other way!
Sounds like a club we want to be a member of.
